Fine Gelfand, textile artist

Hi, I'm Fine Gelfand (pronounced Feena). I consider myself a surface designer* but I indulge in all kinds of fiber machinations. I have been passionately enmeshed in textiles in various forms since I was knee high. Hats have always been a sweet obsession. Nowadays I get a kick out of designing for you (and with you) using all the skills I've acquired along the way. My special niche is Gala Event hats and textiles that offer more than one way to use them. Such as reversible garments, hats and fiber art you can admire on the wall or, if the mood strikes, you can wrap yourself in it to go to a party.

My modus operandi is to constantly quest for cross fertilization between art media and technology. I incorporated Photoshop into my toolbox a few years ago and feel that I've just scratched the surface (pun intended). Each technique I become acquainted with inevitably leads to a layering of skills and more sophistication. A trip to Japan has had a deep and lasting effect on my designs and I delight in creating the new by honoring the old. "Love is sweeter the second time around . . ." The addition of new tricks of the trade has brought back the rush of creative discovery. And that's what I live for . . .

*Surface Design encompasses the coloring, patterning and structuring of fiber and fabric. This involves creative exploration of processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching, embellishing, quilting, weaving, knitting, felting and papermaking.
